In the Thai language, the word baan means ‘house’. However, throughout Thailand’s rural areas, the term baan sometimes refers not to an individual house but to an entire community. It symbolizes the community’s social networks and ability to provide protection, basic needs and a framework for transmitting wisdom and traditions. Baan represents an extension of the family unit into the community. As in many other Asian societies, the community has long served as a basic social welfare system.
