Dancing music: the intermodality of The Forsythe Company: Freya Vass-Rhee

In November 1984 William Forsythe presented a three-part evening of existing work entitled Audio-Visual Stress at Frankfurt’s Schauspielhaus. The evening consisted of France/Dance, an intriguing homage to Balanchine featuring a sound collage of Bach, animal sounds, and text spoken by a dwarf moving between cutouts of historic monumental buildings; Say Bye Bye, which paired the ensemble’s tough aggression with Stan Kenton’s jaunty ‘The Peanut Vendor’ and the percussive music of Chinese New Year; and the shadowy film Berg Ab.
