ABSTRACT

This chapter attempts to clarify the distinction between what is sometimes called “General Ethics” and “Professional Ethics,” specifically in the field of education. With that distinction clarified, the chapter then pursues what the particular “good” is that the profession of teaching uniquely cultivates. The elaboration of the moral goodness of learning and, by association, teaching, begins to clarify the deepest value dimensions of the profession of teaching and provides a platform for educational leaders to argue for and sustain its integrity. Needless to say, the preceding chapter already has pointed the way toward these value dimensions of the practice of teaching.
