Rural social differentiation and political goals in Tanzania

ByRayah Feldman

Tanzania has become noted throughout the world for her serious attempts to achieve socialism by peaceful means. She has thus enjoyed the support of both liberals and revolutionaries-each believing that the direction of her development was towards goals that they could approve. But liberals and revolutionaries make uneasy bedfellows and some scepticism is generated by seeing them together. There are certain ambiguities in the Tanzanian road to socialism which can perhaps explain their partnership but which at the same time need examination. These ambiguities may conceal the contradictions which prevent the road from ever reaching its destination.
