ABSTRACT

The list could go on, but the point is clear. We consume obscene amounts of stuff and in so doing we endanger planetary survival, nourish

global resentment and exploit the bulk of the world’s people and material resources for the benefi t of the few who are part of global consumer culture. The resource impact and global injustice of our consumption mania are bad enough, but Chua (2004) warns that class and ethnic warfare may also result if the gap between indigenous poor and non-indigenous rich continues to grow. In light of these problems, the assumption that economic growth and prosperity are vital national and global goals is increasingly being questioned.
