The Healthy Families Project
The Multiple Family Discussion Group (MFDG) (Steinglass, 1988) model has been successfully used to address various medical conditions including schizophrenia, alcoholism, and cancer. The MFDG examines the psychosocial functioning of families with an ill family member. The group enables families to experience the myriad ways family relationships impact an illness and how an illness impacts family relationships. It challenges the idea of the illness as the central organizing principal for families in all phases of the family life cycle. The initial model was structured and has most effectively been applied to white middle-class families. This chapter will examine the ways in which the model has been adjusted to meet the needs of low-income families of color with a chronic illness.
