The Angry Feelings Toolbox

ByMichelle R. Ward Deanna Linville

Anger is a common stage of grief and loss, even for children. Many children who are coping with illness, death, or disability experience a natural stage of overwhelming anger about such difficult situations. For young children in family therapy, this activity may be useful in helping families help children deal with their difficult emotions. The purpose of this activity is to provide children with a system that they can use at home, with the help of their family, to develop healthy coping skills when feeling angry. The therapist and client create a personalized angermanagement rating system and various verbal and physical techniques that are used by the child as a safe outlet for angry feelings. This intervention gives families hands-on solutions to helping their child manage his or her feelings in a healthier way.
