Self-injury, paradoxically, is often an attempt to escape pain, to comfort oneself, and, sometimes, to reach out for help. The person engaging in self-injury/mutilation is causing pain to the physical body to counteract the pain brought on by external persons or circumstances perceived to be difficult to control or impossible to manage.
