ABSTRACT
The period 1959-2009 has certainly been a process of tribulation and embarrassment for Turks and Europeans alike. Yet for us, students of European politics, this fifty-year timespan is a rare and spectacular phenomenon to examine; in front of our eyes Sisyphus is rolling his boulder up the hill, only to watch it roll back down, and to repeat this for decades.
