Succeeding Stages in Acquisition Process of Acting Performance: A Study on Actors’ Skill in Controlling Speech Timing

In this study, we focused on the skill acquisition process in controlling speech timing when professional actors rehearsed a play. The purpose of this study is the time scale estimation of their speech acts using a recurrence plot method that visualizes the dynamical structure of a system in phase space. The technique conducts a correlation analysis of an embedded discrete data series in a higher-ordered phase space obtained by a time series of raw data (Eckmann et al., 1987). Recurrence quantification analysis (RQA), a well-known method that quantifies differently appearing recurrence plots, can estimate the rhythmic behavior of the system and the time parameters of fluctuations (Riley et al., 1999).
