The East African economies afford an interesting special case in Africa because they form to some degree an inter-dependent economy at the same time as operating as three separate states. Although the arrangements which form the basis for this interdependence have been modified in recent years, their existence has meant that the three countries in some ways form more of an interdependent economic unit than many unitary states.
