Borders, territory, and settlements
Pages 42

The purpose of this chapter is to trace and analyse the interplay of the tangible and symbolic dimensions of territory in the Israel-Palestine conflict. While the number of active territorial conflicts has decreased significantly during the past three decades, territory remains a major component in the political organization and ordering of society (Goertz and Diehl, 1992; Coakley, 1993; Lustick, 1993; Diehl, 1999; Kahler and Walter, 2006). The territorial configuration of the state remains an important component in the inter-state system of ordering, with the physical borders of the country continuing to determine the area within which the state exercises, or attempts to exercise, its control practices.
