ABSTRACT

The function or purpose of language . . . is to allow for an efficient, effective means to develop and exchange thoughts, feelings, ideas, and information.

How on earth did I become a speech-language pathologist when all I wanted to do was write novels? It was the love of language and the desire to be of help to people that led me to speech-language pathology. So, after a brief stint as an English major and an equally brief stint as a psychology major, I stumbled into the field of speech-language pathology, which asks questions about what prevents children from learning language, what happens when disease or accidents cause people to lose their ability to communicate using language, and how can we create the changes that will help them to communicate to the best of their abilities.
