Clifford Owens

In his writing, Clifford Owens has referred to a crisis of meaning that affects black performance

artists, including the notion that blackness is not as readily identified with performance as much

as it is with other mediums.1 Photography, which Owens uses to document his performances, is

a medium that can be seen as an intervention in this crisis, increasing both visibility of black

performance and its history.
