Annie Pootoogook

In fact, Pootoogook’s drawings are a much-needed corrective to naïve perceptions of an

“untouched” North. For example, the drawing A True Story (2006) features figures in synthetic

parkas and boots floating in a body of water along with a red gas can. Pootoogook describes

the event as “really happen[ing] in Cape Dorset … in 1981 or 1982. The men were hunting for

walrus. They put too many walrus in the boat so it was too heavy and the boat sunk. They all

died.”
