A Task-Based Approach for Counseling the Bereaved: J. William Worden and Howard R. Winokuer

I (JWW) once attended a seminar for hospice and health care professionals advertised as “new models” for understanding grief. The presenter, not know-ing I was in the audience, de–ned the tasks of mourning as a stage theory and quickly dismissed this as an outdated and unhelpful way to think about the process of mourning. At best, this shows a lack of understanding; and at worst, ignorance.
