F or over two centuries, young men and women have served in the U.S. mili-tary in defense, support, and protection of its Constitution from enemies, both foreign and domestic. In its lifetime, the United States has participated in 12 wars resulting in approximately 1.1 million accountable American death casualties (Congressional Research Service, 2010). However, the toll of death casualties does not end at the reportable number of the deceased, as it is magni–ed exponentially by its impact on survivors affected by each individual loss.
