Learning Theory 51 52
The primary purpose of instructional design (ID) is to facilitate learning and improve performance. Therefore, theories which explain learning are extremely relevant to designers and the field’s knowledge base. Learning theory involves understanding the role of human behavior and mental functions of the mind. It also provides noteworthy explanations of both learning and performance. In this chapter we will explore:
• Several learning theories including behavioral, cognitive, and social learning approaches;
• The application of learning theory to ID; and • Empirical foundations for learning theory applications to ID.
