The role of the psychiatrist in treating personality disorder

This chapter will consider theoretical and practical aspects of the role of psychiatrist in an inpatient service providing lengthy psychological treatment for individuals with severe personality disorder. Theoretical aspects will include consideration of general changes to the role of psychiatrists, psychiatrists’ attitudes to personality disorder and a summary of models and theories of personality disorder. Practical aspects include the psychiatric contribution to formulations of individuals with complex psychopathology, the role of medication in facilitating psychological treatment, the contribution of the psychiatrist to risk assessment and the psychiatrist as member of the multidisciplinary team.
