Youth Suicidal Behavior in the Context of School Violence
The conceptualization of school violence can be broadened to include self-destructive behavior, including suicide. This chapter provides an overview of youth suicidal behavior, including suicidal ideation, suicide-related communications, suicide attempts, and suicide. Demographic information regarding youth suicidal behavior is reviewed, including a discussion of ethnicity, gender, age, sexual orientation, geography, and socioeconomic variables and their relationship to suicidal behavior in children and adolescents. A review of risk factors, protective factors, and possible warning signs of suicidal behavior is presented, as well as a brief discussion of the issue of suicide “contagion.” The relationship between youth suicide and homicide is also addressed, particularly in the context of school shootings among adolescents.
