ABSTRACT
This chapter attempts to place the process of procuring and providing complex performance in a broader evolutionary pattern regarding the institutional and spatial division of labour. We argue that the demise of large, vertically integrated fi rms has fundamentally transformed the modes of procurement and provision of products and services in large tracts of the economy, involving both the public and private sectors.
