ABSTRACT
IN addition to the daily worship (nikkû), literally ‘daily offerings’, solemn celebrations, called matsuri, take place periodically in every Shintô temple. The Chinese word saïshi, or saï, festival, is more generally used in compound terms instead of matsuri, although its connotation is not exactly the same.(166) Thus the days on which matsuri are celebrated are termed saïjitsu.
