ABSTRACT

The international activities of universities have dramatically expanded in volume, scope, and complexity over the past two decades. This chapter examines the nature of internationalization, the motivations for it, and the international activities of universities worldwide. Internationalization, especially commercial cross-border education, is big business, earning considerable income for universities and other providers. International programs offer opportunities for students to study abroad and to learn about other cultures. International initiatives also provide access to higher education in some countries where local institutions cannot meet the demand for access.
