ABSTRACT
Section I of this chapter reviews the evolution of PIL in India, which can be traced to the mid-1970s, and the debate about its appropriate label. An attempt is made to divide PIL cases over the past 30 years or so into three broad phases to better understand the transformations that have taken place in PIL jurisprudence over these years. This section also highlights the major variables that provided impetus to the development of PIL in India.
