ABSTRACT

As the previous chapters have highlighted, there is substantial agreement within the social movement literature that the Internet has certainly enhanced the capacity for political mobilization among groups and individuals. This chapter focuses on a particular online organization, MoveOn. org, which is one of the most successful public policy advocacy groups in the digital era. It works both within and outside the formal realm of institutional politics and is well known for pioneering tactics to support progressive issues, create and foster a grassroots virtual community, and raise unprecedented amounts of money to support Democratic candidates. In fact, MoveOn PAC is now one of the leading sources of fi nancial support for Democratic candidates outside of the Party’s committees.
