ABSTRACT

My account is of a study I carried out with three other members of the M.Ed programme at the University of Manchester. Our task was to work with colleagues in the school in carrying out research that could contribute to the school’s efforts to respond to learner diversity. This meant that it was vital that we developed good working relationships with key staff in the school. We were keen to carry out an inquiry that would have an impact on school

policy and practice. Our lectures and reading had provided a basic framework for a collaborative research process but it was still up to us to develop our own unique approach. Although all four group members had previous experience of engaging in collaborative work as part of previous studies and teaching responsibilities, only one student (myself ) had participated in a collaborative research inquiry – and my experience had been in India.
