ABSTRACT

But what happens when language does not develop normally? Language delays are correlated with various behavioral, emotional, and academic concerns. Depending on the specic types of language delay and other key factors, these problems may include withdrawal and poor social interactions, lower levels of imaginary and pretend play, and lower tolerance for frustration. Some studies have found links between specic types of language delays and aggression, and not surprisingly, there are also correlations between language impairments and parental stress (Irwin, Carter, & Briggs-Gowan, 2002; McCabe, 2005; van Daal, Verhoeven, & van Balkom, 2007).
