ABSTRACT

In an article in the Times of London, Elizabeth Heyert (2006) asks, “Are they so distant from us, the dead? It is easier, certainly, to keep them at one remove, but in the end it can’t be done. ey are us, the dead, they are what we will be, and that’s all there is to it.” ese words warn us rather sharply that however we may think of death, there is no way for us to avoid it; and whether we look for them or not, the dead are there to remind us that one day we will all be members of their society.
