South Africa: When Marriage and the Nuclear Family Are Not the Norm

The 2000 time use survey represented the fi rst time that Statistics South Africa had attempted a time use survey. At the time the survey was conducted, Statistics South Africa estimated the country’s population at around 44 million, with just under 36 million people aged 10 years and older, the age group covered by the survey.
