ABSTRACT

Higher education accountability initiatives, beyond those of institutions themselves, are an important feature of many higher education systems. In some countries these accountability initiatives are long established, institutionalised and accepted; yet in other countries they are a recent phenomenon (Huisman & Currie, 2004; Materu, 2007). Some higher education systems still do not have external accountability mechanisms.
