ABSTRACT

Why do Gypsy and Traveller1 pupils continue to underachieve in UK schools? What causes so many of them to drop out of school well before the statutory leaving age? Historically, a nomadic lifestyle was perceived to be the main barrier to educational access but, increasingly, as more Gypsy and Traveller families become sedentary, other cultural reasons are typically used to explain educational non-engagement. This chapter draws on the findings of a major longitudinal study, which examined the experiences of young Gypsies and Travellers in school and exposed evidence of psychological discomfort. Subsequent analysis of psycho-cultural effects offers an alternative perspective on obstacles to inclusion for this group of pupils.
