ABSTRACT
In Chapter 2, social development was presented in part as a multidimensional, multilevel and value-based approach to the development of a society as a whole. Social development is seen in this text as needing to encompass all dimensions of a society, including particularly the economic, political, social, cultural and ecological, within a comprehensive and integrated approach to building a society that will be inclusive and designed to give all participants the greatest opportunities possible for achieving their full potential and contributing to society. Social development needs also to be addressed at, ideally, the international, national and local levels, with a comprehensive approach adopted at each level. Finally, the goals of and approaches to social development need to be value-based, embracing values that refl ect human rights and include a focus on equity and people’s participation with the goal of enhancing human well-being.
