The Relational Traumas of Bereavement
In this chapter, we address the dimension of trauma in bereavement from the relational aspect of the experience. These include a range of features that share one common element: the relationship is the core of the trauma. The traumatic aspects considered here are endemic to the experience and psychological organization of the relationship with the other during life, and the transformation now bound up with them following their death (Rubin et al., 2003). By adopting the bifocal perspective of the Two-Track Model of Bereavement, we are both able and challenged to consider trauma as it relates to each of the tracks. We invite the reader to think more deeply with us about relational aspects of trauma and their significance for our clinical work.
