ABSTRACT

Plato proposed that four core virtues of the ideal Hellenic city – wisdom, courage, justice, and temperance – were anchored in individuals’ soul. In the thirteenth century, in Christian theology, three holy virtues – faith, hope, and charity – were combined with the Platonic virtues, resulting in seven cardinal virtues. Other religions also include these virtues, as described by Peterson and Seligman (2004) in their analysis of character strengths and virtues.
