ABSTRACT
Furthermore, the scientifi c literature dealing with different conceptual approaches on poverty is characterized by the crossing of many subjects of the social sciences. Much research efforts address the subject by emphasizing economic, political, philosophical, sociological, or anthropological issues. These publications are too numerous to be listed here. Despite their diversity, it is interesting to highlight two predominant approaches in the literature on the empirical understanding of poverty: the monetary or utilitarian1 approach and the non-monetary one that continue to lead research in this fi eld since the 1970s.
