ABSTRACT
Refl ection on the epistemological and ontological status of special sciences is refl ection on their degree of autonomy or independence from the basic science of physics. The debate on special sciences is thus closely connected to two other major issues in philosophy of science. The fi rst is reductionism; the second is the thesis of the unity of science.
