ABSTRACT

Chapter Overview In this chapter we highlight our current research and development efforts to promote exemplary science instruction and assessment with ELL students in a large urban school district. This research is motivated by the goal of improving science and literacy instruction and achievement of ELL students, especially in the context of high-stakes testing in science that is implemented in many states and reported for formative purposes according to NCLB. The research project we describe represents an effort to develop science instruction and assessment protocols that are inquiry-based, aligned with state standards, and culturally responsive to ELL students.
