ABSTRACT

We have noted that Barbara’s class maintains an almost continuous academic focus, with only brief and smooth transitions between each lesson or activity and the next. Creating and sustaining this kind of learning environment takes a great deal of planning and preparation. The same is true of other prominent features of her curriculum, notably its integration, connectedness, and personalization to individual students’ life experiences and home backgrounds. This chapter explores Barbara’s planning and preparation work, which she views as an ongoing part of her teaching role.
