ABSTRACT

If the divinity of Jesus is one way in which Christian splits from Judaism are analysed then it is perhaps the issue of salvation itself that has been arguably the other major area for understanding the ‘parting of the ways’. More precisely, one of the most prominent controversies in the history of New Testament studies (modern and pre-modern) has been how to understand Paul’s views on salvation and justification: does salvation and justification come through doing good works, through God’s grace, or some kind of combination of the two?
