From the political economy of development to development economics: Implications for Africa

ByBEN FINE

The purpose of this chapter is less to elaborate an elusive economics or even political economy of Africa than to outline the more general evolution of development economics within which Africa has been located as an object of study. This is primarily an exercise in the history of economic thought but, as such, should not be confined to economics alone but is also attached to interdisciplinarity (especially relations with development studies) and to the broader material and intellectual circumstances (including policy stances and practices) that have interacted with development economics as a field of study (including teaching) and research and advocacy (including the externally funded).
