ABSTRACT

Taken from Jacob’s Ladder, New Nightmare and Alien (1979) these examples demonstrate three fi lmic moments culminating in what psychologists identify as startle and what I will call-due to greater precision in terms of intensity and onomatopoeia-cinematic shock. The cinematic shock is a brief, highly compressed type of fear. It responds to a threatening object or event that ruptures the situation suddenly and unexpectedly.
