ABSTRACT

This chapter analyses the regional dynamics at the NUTS3 level in Central and Eastern European Member States of the European Union. In particular, gross domestic product (GDP) changes in the 1998–2004 period are analysed at sub-regional level. The chapter outlines the dichotomy between the capital city regions and the remaining regions of a given country. It provides an evaluation of changes in the spatial structures of Central and Eastern European (CEE) countries, on the basis of the regional concentration of gross GDP measured by the Gini coefficient. Regional development in the CEE countries was also the object of analyses in many of the projects carried out as part of the ESPON initiative. From 1998 to 2004, the real GDP changes in individual regions were extremely varied and ranged from 85.9 per cent to 173.2 per cent and, respectively, from 66.3 per cent to 136.1 per cent as compared with the national average.
