Psychiatry and psychoanalysis: a conceptual mapping

ByDAVID BELL

The relationship between psychoanalysis and psychiatry has been understandably complex and not without its dif®culties. In this chapter I will endeavour to provide a conceptual framework for thinking about the differences between a psychiatric and a psychoanalytic approach. I will explore how the two disciplines might relate to each other in a more productive way and, through illustrations, show the relevance of analytic thinking to general psychiatric settings.
