After the tsunami hit Sri Lanka, a flood of foreign volunteers, aid workers and NGOs followed who joined those already involved in providing relief to the survivors. They in turn were followed by journalists, evaluators and researchers who documented the tsunami and its aftermath, in a pattern that has been common to major disasters since at least 1883, when the eruption of the Krakatau volcano caused a tsunami that killed thousands on the shores of Java and Sumatra (Winchester 2004).
