ABSTRACT
This chapter looks at the beginnings of semiotic thought in human infancy and childhood. These beginnings take place within the spontaneous and commonplace activities of early childhood. Consisting as they do of trivialseeming actions, they often pass unnoticed by adults. Put simply, the origin of expression, representation and symbolisation can be found in what is often thought of as “messing-about”.
