ABSTRACT

China, with a population of 1.3 billion, is the most populous country in the world. The Republic of China was formed in 1911, ending a lengthy period of feudalism. The People’s Republic of China was established in 1949. After a period of enforced isolation, China has followed an “open door” policy for the past 30 years. Joining the World Trade Organization in 2001 and hosting the Olympic Games in 2008 are considered landmarks in China’s development and modernization.
