ABSTRACT
Romanian historiography tells a triumphal story of the rapid and comprehensive modernization of Bucharest’s cityscape between the mid-nineteenth century and the end of World War II. In reality, the development of Bucharest in this period was piecemeal, somewhat chaotic, and subject to hesitations, failures, unfinished projects, and resistance from preservationists.
