ABSTRACT
Rhetoric is not a subject that doctoral students in every discipline will routinely study. Nor will supervisors universally use the term ‘rhetorical’ in their discussions of writing with students. The purpose of using the term here is to position centrally the process of learning to write for specific audiences, which is, or should be, an important element of the doctorate.
