ABSTRACT

The question `What is sex?' may seem fairly straightforward, but depending on the frame of reference used there will be a variety of different answers. The word `sex', as well as being both evocative and provocative, holds an array of diverse meanings and concepts and usually refers to the physical distinction between men and women or penile penetration of the vagina. However, it can also refer to sexuality, attraction, body parts and a wider range of sexual behaviours. This chapter seeks to explore the differences between these concepts, to challenge some of the myths that are prevalent in the area and to develop an understanding of the complex interactions between them.
