ABSTRACT

The title of this chapter and the quote by Sewell highlight the focus of this book, namely, the focus on exploring the journey of young black people overcoming the impact of disadvantaged compulsory education to achieve success at the ‘transitional phase’. In essence, it argues for a nuanced understanding of young black people’s transitional experiences through the exploration of how dominant discourses link the intersection of youth, ‘race’/ethnicity, gender, social class and the experiences of compulsory education in the shaping of inclusionary and exclusory transitions. The chapter also raises the question of the extent to which the terms of the debate concerning transitional success, exclusion and stratification warrant further discussion.
